Problem: Thieves can duplicate the code to your garage door opener and gain access to your home.
Solution: You can install a universal conversion kit that automatically changes the code on your remote every time you close the garage door.
Materials list:
garage door code conversion kit
drill, with driver bit
hammer
flat-head screwdriver
micro screwdriver
wire strippers
- Disconnect the power to the opener by unplugging it.
- Determine whether the receiver is internal or external. If the receiver antenna wire comes from within the unit, the receiver is internal. If the receiver is external, it will be mounted somewhere outside the unit; if so, refer to the owner's manual for disconnection instructions.
- Locate the terminal strip on the garage door opener.
- Determine where you want to install the receiver. The receiver should be placed at least 2' away from the opener.
- Attach the receiver with the two screws provided, and remove the cover.
- Extend a length of low-voltage wire (provided with the kit) from the opener to the new receiver. Use the staples provided with the kit to hold the wire in place. Leave room for another wire under the staples to save time when you connect the power wire.
* Make sure the wire is out of the way of any moving parts.
- Pull the two leads in the low-voltage wire apart and strip the ends. Insert the ends into the receiver unit as instructed by the manufacturer.
- At the garage door opener, attach the leads to the appropriate terminals.
- Run a wire from the receiver to the transformer, which provides the power for the receiver, and separate and strip the ends. Bend the ends into hooks and connect them to the transformer terminals. Extend the wire to the receiver using the same staples as before.
- Insert the stripped ends of the wires into the appropriate terminal slots on the receiver and tighten them firmly.
- Replace the cover and plug in the receiver and opener.
- Test the new remote control and cut off the antenna wire for the old receiver.
* Multiple remotes can be programmed to work with a single receiver.
* Discard your old remotes; new ones are provided with the kit.
