Ann and Russell Showalter's St. Augustine Vernacular

Woburn Manor: Homeowners Tracey and Todd Bowman had to do a bit of detective work when it came to restoring their 200-year-old home. Known as Woburn Manor, the Maryland home had suffered quite a bit of damage, both from vandals and weather. There were few clues remaining to aid in restoring the home to its original condition, but with the help of contractor Dick Gruber and some old photographs the Bowmans were able to recreate many special details.

St. Augustine Frame Vernacular: Ann McDonald Showalter's childhood home holds a lot more for her than memories. After she and husband Russell decided to restore it, they found termites had caused considerable damage to the frame vernacular . Contractor John Valdez helped them decide on the best restoration style. To the Showalters, they weren't just restoring a home but preserving a legacy.

Richard Green and Pat Richardson's Bungalow

Greensboro Greek Revival: Mother Nature was not very kind to homeowner Jerry Nix's Greek revival in North Carolina. A tornado had ruined most of the architectural integrity of this 1856 home. Contractor Siler Rothrock helped reconstruct the home 's facade, but did not go for absolute perfection. Certain flaws were left, which is just the way Mother Nature would have intended it to be.

Delaware Bungalow: Homeowners Richard Green and Pat Richardson bought their 1936 Rehobeth Beach bungalow from the original owner, who was able to lead them to sources he'd used in building the home. Builder Jeff Balthaser showed how to use these resources to not only restore and preserve but also upgrade the home.

Tips, Terms and Tradesmen

In The Details: Wright Windows
Stained glass artist Bob Cooper has what could be considered a high-pressure job; restoring windows designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Because Wright's designs were unique, restoring these windows requires exact renderings.

Problem Solver: Solar Power Restoration
Since homes used to be heated using nature, heating a century-old farmhouse with solar power is not a modern idea . Architect Craig Moloney designed a solar heated addition for a Maryland farmhouse .
