Like cities all across America, Denver was hit hard by the depression. Millionaire Lawrence Phipps decided to build a 70-room mansion to provide jobs for local carpenters and artists. The construction of his dream home spread his wealth throughout the city. Upon completion the 33,000-square-foot mansion boasted the first indoor tennis court west of the Mississippi and two rooms that were imported from overseas and reassembled in Denver.
