Smoke alarms can double your chances of surviving a fire--if they're in proper working order and in the right place. Ideally you should have smoke alarms in every bedroom, at the top of stairwells, and in downstairs living areas.

It's recommended that you check your smoke alarms at least once a month and change the batteries out completely when you change the clocks in the fall and spring. And if you hear a quick chirping beeping sound, that means the battery is low and it's time to make a change.

One final note: Don't remove your smoke alarm batteries and use them somewhere else, like your remote control! It's better to get up and change your channel than to have a smoke alarm that doesn't work.
