Home repair expert Henry Harrison helps a guest replace a standard electrical outlet with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet that trips automatically in an emergency. On his elbow grease scale of one to four, Harrison gives this job a one but cautions to be very safety conscious when working with electricity.

Steps:

1. Turn off the power to the outlet at the breaker box. Use a circuit tester to double check and make sure the power's off (figure A).

2. Remove the outlet cover with a screwdriver. Test the outlet once again to make sure the power is off. Test both sides of the outlet.

3. Remove the screws holding the outlet in place (figure B). Pull the outlet out of the box and check to make sure power is off again.

4. Disconnect the wiring from the outlet (figure C).

5. Connect wiring for the GFCI outlet, beginning with the neutral wire which connects to the silver terminal on the outlet. Connect the ground wire to the green terminal next. A pair of needle-nose pliers comes in handy for bending the stiff wire (figure D). Finally, connect the hot wire to the brass screw.

6. Once all the connections are made, slide outlet into box and secure with screws.

7. Turn power back on and press the "test" button on the outlet. The power should go off. You can turn it back on by hitting the "reset" button.
