Steps:

1. Unplug your phones to prevent any shocks from incoming calls. WARNING: If you wear a pacemaker, never work on telephone wiring.

2. Remove the screws on the existing jack and pull the mounting box out of the wall so you can reach the wires (figure A). They should be color-coded with yellow, black, red and green wires.

3. Use the awl to punch a hole through to the other side of the wall (figure B).

4. Carefully strip about an inch of the sheath off the new phone wire and separate the four small wires within. Use the wire stripper to strip a bit of insulation off each wire (figure C).

5. Connect the wires to the matching terminals on the phone jack (figure D). Thread the other end of the wire through a hole in the back of the junction box (figure E).

6. Now run the new wire through the hole in the wall you punched with the awl and repeat the process, attaching the wires to the new surface-mounted outlet (figure F).

7. Push extra wire back into the wall and screw the new plate onto the wall. Reattach old outlet in other room as well.

8. Plug the phones back in and reach out and touch someone to test your work.
