Replacing a lock is fairly simple and usually a screwdriver is the only tool you will need. The job does go much easier if you have an assistant, though.
Just remove the lock from the inside of the door and pull the lock side and switch sides apart (figure A).
Remove the deadbolt from the side of the door (figure B). Place the new deadbolt into the side of the door, and make sure it's right side up. Slide the switch, lock sides into the door and secure with screws (figure C).
You can purchase a set of locks that are all keyed the same so you only need one key to open any door.
If you have a glass window in or near your door police recommend using a double-key lock. This means a key is needed to unlock the door on both sides, so that if someone smashes your window, he or she can't just reach in and unlock your door.
However, now you need a key to get out of the house in case of an emergency. You may not want to do this if there are small children in the home. Also make sure to have a plan for emergency evacuation.
