Tools with wooden handles are special because they're often passed down from generation to generation. So you want to take good care of them. And you're gonna need to preserve those precious wooden handles to keep them from warping and splintering.

Materials

Medium-grit sandpaper
Steel wool
Turpentine
Linseed oil
Gloves
Protective goggles

Remember to wear gloves and adequate eye protection because you're working with solvents. Begin by taking the handle and sanding it lightly with the medium-grit sandpaper to remove any splinters or stains. Always remember to work with the grain of the wood.

Once everything is smooth dip the steel wool pad in a solution of two parts linseed oil and one part turpentine and rub it into the wood (see photo). The oil and turpentine act together to condition the wood, keeping it pliable.

Let the handle dry for at least 24 hours, then wipe off any oil with a clean towel .
