When I think about which tools are most important to have around the house, I think about the type of job I need to do. Everyday fix-up jobs like drilling, sawing and hammering.
First on the list is a good 16-ounce claw hammer, because it's light enough, not too heavy. You can bang in a nail all the way if you have to, and if you have to remove it, you can do so with a lot of leverage with the claw.
Also, a nice adjustable wrench. You can take this wrench and remove any size nut or bolt.
Next in line is one of my favorites. This pocketknife belonged to my granddad. It's indispensable for opening packages, boxes and just general all around cutting.
A tape measure is indispensable around the house because you can measure just about anything short or long. This is a 25-foot model.
A flat-head screwdriver, in addition to a Phillips-head--an unbeatable combination.
I have a handsaw that oft times I'll throw in the back of my truck because you never know when you're going to need it. It's good for cross cutting and ripping.
For prying in tight places, I'm kind of partial to this flat-shafted pry bar. And on the flip side of it we have a hook, which will allow me to get under a piece of wood and really do some prying.
Whenever I have to cut metal, I take this hacksaw. It allows you to get right in there and cut off a bolt or small piece of metal.
When I need a third hand, this can't be beat. It's an adjustable clamp. When you have to hold something, saw it, and concentrate at the same time, this is a good tool to keep in your box.
Last but not least is a cordless drill. It has ample power for driving screws, drilling or, with the proper attachments, you can sand and grind also.
