Toolbox: Anchors, Toggles

Help Around the House : Episode ARH-160 -- More Projects »
Once your walls are complete, it is going to be time to start hanging things like pictures and mirrors. And if you want to hold them securely to a hollow wall, the best things that you can use are plastic anchors and toggle or butterfly bolts.

Screws and Anchors To install these, what we are going to do is drill a 1/4" hole all the way through the drywall. Then we just insert the anchor into the hole and tap it in flush on the front side. Once you begin to tighten the screw, the jaws of the plastic anchor will open into the drywall for a nice solid hold.

Butterfly or Toggle Bolts For the real heavy objects, a toggle bolt or a butterfly bolt is excellent. It comes in two parts, the wings (see inset) and of course the bolt. To install these, first drill a 1/2" hole. The bolt slides into the wings and once the wings are inserted, they spring open on the other side of the wall. You can hear it. Once the screw is tightened, the bolt is secure. It is nice and snug. Now you are ready to mount your masterpiece.
