Decoy Lake mural (#8500)
container of water
sponge
two 2" x 12" x 6" plastic foam pieces
thick tacky glue
duck pattern and marking pen
coping saw
sandpaper (35- and 180-grit)
joint compound
1/4" x 12" wood dowel
1/4" drill
4" wood piece for stand
acrylic paints (DecoArt Americana Acrylic paint: Milk Chocolate, Burnt Umber, Golden Straw)
1/2" flat paintbrush
satin clear finish spray
Steps:
Mural
- Measure and mark wall for mural. Dip sponge in water and wet back of print. Apply to wall, smooth out with sponge.
Carved Bird
- Apply generous amount of glue to one piece of plastic foam and put both pieces together. Place heavy board or weight on top and allow to dry overnight.
- Trace duck pattern onto one side of plastic foam with marking pen. Cut out shape with coping saw (figure A) and roughly shape sides and head.
- Use 35-grit sandpaper to sculpt duck.
- Drill 1/4-inch hole in center of stand. Glue dowel in place, and then push dowel in bottom center of the duck. Glue and let dry.
- Apply joint compound with fingers to entire duck as smooth as possible. Let dry.
- Sand duck surface with 180-grit paper until smooth. Apply more joint compound if any holes appear.
- Paint duck, dowel and stand Milk Chocolate and let dry. Add Burnt Umber and Golden Straw as desired (figure B).
- Spray with two coats of acrylic finish.
