When steaming wallpaper, lay out a tarp to catch drips.
Before installing the vertical paneling, Matt Fox removes wallpaper in the dining area with a steamer. His tips for using a steamer, which warms up the wallpaper glue and makes paper removal easier, include:
  • Remove the paper as you go, while it is still warm from the steamer.
  • Spread a tarp under the work area, since the steamer does drip.
  • Be careful where you set the steamer down, since it can ruin some surfaces.
  • Cover switch plates to keep moisture out.

Before hanging the paneling, the wall was prepped with latex primer and painted a crisp white. A stripe of paint the color of the paneling was painted in the corners and next to the baseboard, since the paneling must be hung slightly spaced at joints to allow for expansion (use a quarter for spacing). The paneling was hung to a height of six feet. Two inches were subtracted for the baseboard.

To hang paneling:
  1. Measure where cuts need to go on the paneling, mark with tic marks.
  2. Use a straightedge for cutting. Put tape on the bottom of the saw (figure A) so it won't mar the surface.
  3. Use color-coordinated panel nails and apply panel adhesive to the back in a zigzag pattern.
  4. Use a level frequently to check that the paneling is hung straight.
  5. Trim out the top of paneling with a narrow strip of trim.
  6. Use plastic spacers behind the outlet to pull the outlet and cover out far enough once the paneling is installed.
