Instead of tearing down dated wallpaper, Kitty Bartholomew suggests giving it a face-lift with a coat of pigmented glaze. Designer Carol Schalla demonstrates three different looks and adds this technique does not work well on vinyl or grass cloth . She suggests testing a small area first to check for bubbling or shredding. Work one panel at a time, from top to bottom, and don't overlap the color.
Whitewash. Mix equal parts white latex paint with clear mixing glaze. Using a large kitchen sponge, wipe the color right over the wallpaper (figure A). Texture the finish with a dry sponge, blotting off the glaze and evening out the medium.
Tea stain. Mix equal parts brown latex paint with clear mixing glaze. Apply to wallpaper with a sea sponge. A nice effect on plaid paper is to create a vertical striated effect with the sponge (figure B).
Opaque. Choose a color compatible with the wallpaper and mix equal parts paint and glaze. Apply in layers with a sponge, until the finish is as opaque as desired (figure C).
